This is Minnesota right now. We’ve had nearly 50 inches of snow near the Twin Cities, and it’s in the negative digits. Everyone is whining about the long, brutally cold winter, and yet, I am the strange one. Cold doesn’t bother me. Snow is only an issue if I have to commute. I like layers. I like “bundling up.” I love soup. I adore cute boots. And I never tire of the winter routine. Perhaps this Kansas girl is still in love with her adopted state. Just a guess.

Top 13 photos of 2013
Since ending my Photo 365 project, I’ve been going over and over my photos from 2013, many times wondering why I didn’t shoot from a different angle, crop a scene left instead of right, or wishing that I had taken more time to find a better shot.
In my reflection, I selected my top 13 of ’13. This was my first pass – no thought – no review or rethinking. These are the images that made me linger and remember. And I’ll probably change my mind tomorrow.

Photo 365: The End
I started this year-long photo project without much thought. Piece of cake; I take pictures with my iPhone all the time.
Who was I kidding?
Somewhere between San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, New York, England, Scotland, Ireland, two broken iPhone cases and one new kitten, I started to “see” the world around me a little better than I had before. I also realized that I’m right handed to a fault, and primarily see all of my photographs with my right eye, scanning right to left, before I take a picture.
Day 365 of Photo 365 is finally here, and I want to thank everyone for taking this journey with me – allowing me to share what I saw every day of the last year. I hope you have enjoyed the journey as much as I have.
A winter ride
In recent years the Twin Cities has been a top contender for the number one bike city in America by bicycling.com. Why? Sure, we have miles of dedicated bike lanes in the city, in addition to bike trails in nearly every state park. But I think one of the reasons we are a number one bike city is that an estimated 4,000 people in the metro ride their bikes to work – in the winter. For the record, it was zero degrees and snowing when I took this picture on my commute home. Take that, Portland.

Minnesota nice
When a fan-favorite hockey player returns to the Xcel Energy Center for the first time after being traded to another team, the Minnesota Wild welcome the player back and allow the crowd to pay homage. On day 363 of Photo 365, Cal Clutterbuck returned in a New York Islanders jersey after spending five seasons with the Wild. He received a standing ovation. I’m guessing many clubs pay tribute to players like this, but it also seems like a very “Minnesota nice” thing to do. Or perhaps we got our good hockey manners from Canada.
Run Westy Run
Attending a music show when you’re past a certain age means you need to prepare. One or two naps throughout the day are a necessity, along with comfortable shoes and earplugs.
Run Westy Run, a Minneapolis band with a cult following during the late 1980s and 90s, reunited this weekend with a big show at First Avenue on Friday, Dec. 27. When they added a second show at the Turf Club the following night, husband and I knew what we had to do. Get tickets and prepare.
Minneapolis music legends were in attendance, both on stage and in the audience, which is common at the Turf and one of the reasons I love seeing music at the tiny club.
