You don’t see me taking your picture

I wanted to experiment with abstract tonight, so I hit the streets of downtown Saint Paul with my iPhone by my side and my finger on the shutter button. I just snapped as I walked. The end result was a lot of fun blur, and my victims had no idea. I might be on to something.

The University Avenue Project

The University Avenue Project was originally launched in 2010. Artist Wing Young Huie turned a six mile stretch of University Avenue into an art gallery of 500 photographs, mostly street scenes of the people who live near University Avenue. It was part of revitalization of an area not far from downtown Saint Paul, known for its ethnic restaurants and grocery stores, along with higher poverty and crime rates than west of the avenue.

This mural is a permanent installation on the side of a library in the Frogtown district, which has bounced back very nicely since 2010. Perhaps the neighborhood was inspired by being part of an amazing art project.

Tonight I went to the Minnesota Museum of American Art for an opening called “The Studio Sessions: Minnesota Artists of the 1970s.” There was such a vibrant energy in the space, I knew abstracts of people enjoying art was going to be my photo of the day. The problem was I couldn’t pick my favorite.

Many of the artists who were photographed working in their studios back in the 70s were in attendance. Their work inspired me to do the type of art I love most – creating photographs.
