Farewell to Dublin

This morning husband and I said goodbye to Dublin with a stroll over the river, and a picnic breakfast in the center median of Upper O’Connell Street. It was a grand holiday, but it’s time to come home. As I was lamenting the end of our vacation to the very nice taxi driver taking us to the airport, he kindly reminded me, “You have to go home in order to come back again.” Well said.

Temple Bar rain dance

It’s the last day of holiday travel, and I’m not ready go home. It has been a lovely trip, and I plan to share photos here in the near future.

Today is day 172 of Photo 365 in the Temple Bar district in Dublin, Ireland.

Belfast barricade

When you wander the streets of Belfast, you begin to notice a reoccurring pattern on the fencing – barbed wire. Whether from days past or to keep thieves away, the barbed wire on fenced areas is a reminder of how hard the people of Northern Ireland have struggled to find balance between the crosses on their fences and the painful stabs only a few inches away.

Love and a pint

Today involved a quick afternoon stop in Glasgow. We only had a few hours to roam the streets, and found romantic architecture and gritty street scenes. I probably could spend another few days.

Before dinner we stopped at The Pot Still on Hope Street for cider and a taste of whiskey. Across from us was this couple, sipping their drinks, walking canes lying side by side. The gentleman would limp to the bar to get his wife another whiskey each time she needed a refill. And they laughed and whispered into each others ear.

A Scottish hike

Today husband and I hiked through the Scottish Highlands to Edradour Distillery, the smallest whiskey distillery in Scotland. The hike was recommended and quite the experience. We went through a few pastures, waved at a nice gent mowing his lawn, had grass up to our waists on more than one occasion and accidentally trespassed on the estate adjoining the distillery. On top of everything else, I know more about Scotch whiskey now than I did yesterday.

Day 166 of my Photo 365 project is a stained glass window from Saint Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, a must see if you’re walking along the Royal Mile.
