The art in the Saint Paul Art Crawl is always good, but one of the bonus features is getting to see the inside of the old warehouses where the artists live.

This is day 278 of Photo 365 inside the Tilsner Building in Lowertown.

Lowertown artist in permanent residence

Ta-coumba Aiken is an iconic Lowertown artist, known most recently for the Forever Saint Paul Lite Brite project, but also known for his large scale paintings, building murals and other public art pieces that are scattered throughout the city.

Minnesota Originals did a fascinating feature on Ta-coumba in 2011 that captures his love, spirit and sense of community. In this video you will see a quick glimpse of this mural, which overlooks a parking lot on 9th Street in downtown Saint Paul.

The women reaching up to a streaky dusk sky this evening felt warm and inviting, very much like Ta-coumba’s personality.

First Fridays

Tonight I went to a photo exhibit at Lowertown First Fridays. Husband had several photos in an exhibit, so I thought I would document the event. The last photo is me taking a picture of me. The actual photograph is an abstract image of yours truly walking through the Tate Modern in London. It was taken on my 40th birthday (seeing the museum was on my bucket list, in addition to eating amazing Indian food). ‘Twas a good night, and a wonderful chance to relive a very good memory.

The Studio Sessions

Tonight I went to the Minnesota Museum of American Art for an opening called “The Studio Sessions: Minnesota Artists of the 1970s.” There was such a vibrant energy in the space, I knew abstracts of people enjoying art was going to be my photo of the day. The problem was I couldn’t pick my favorite.

Many of the artists who were photographed working in their studios back in the 70s were in attendance. Their work inspired me to do the type of art I love most – creating photographs.
