I take the skyway

“You take the skyway, high above the busy little one-way …”
– The Replacements

On day 311 of Photo 365 I took my favorite skyway in Lowertown and hummed The Replacements in my head.

Looking inside your pictures

Spoiler alert: I take a lot of average snapshots. Shocker, right? Even I don’t fool myself. So for all of you who don’t think your snapshots are good enough, instead think about what is inside of your pictures.

Day 310 of Photo 365 was originally part of a snarky text to husband. I was rolling my eyes at the truck in front of me during my morning commute. I doubt a police officer would have thought this was legal. But then I looked at the shapes. Shards rose from the paper barrels like golden glass. Picture complete.

Eleven years later

In October 2002 I attended a gubernatorial fundraiser in the Wells Fargo Center building in downtown Minneapolis for Roger Moe. I was excited because Senators Paul Wellstone and Ted Kennedy were both scheduled to speak at the event, and Walter Mondale would be in attendance. Mr. Moe kicked off the fundraiser, announcing that Paul Wellstone had decided to attend a funeral in northern Minnesota instead of flying back for the rally, but Ted Kennedy had plenty to say to fill both speaking slots. We laughed. It was a fair trade.

About halfway through Senator Kennedy’s speech, everyone’s cell phones started to ring. I mean, everyone’s, mine included.

Minutes later Roger Moe announced to the crowd Paul Wellstone’s plane had gone down in northern Minnesota. Stunned silence pierced the room. The days that followed were surreal for many Minnesotans as we mourned the loss of our senator of the people. I always think of the event when I look at this building, even on day 307 of Photo 365.

The bridge that fell

On August 1, 2007 the 35W Bridge collapsed in Minneapolis during evening rush hour. It was horrifying to watch the news coverage of crushed cars and school buses under concrete, resting in the river. I immediately contacted co-workers who traveled over the bridge every day, and they had remarkably passed over just minutes before it went down.

The new 35W Bridge is beautiful and strong, and this is the view of downtown Minneapolis from the bridge on day 306 of Photo 365.

Dia de Los Muertos

This is in dedication to the number two person in my life. My mother will always be my beacon, but since she is thankfully still alive, my number two influence on this Day of the Dead celebration is Ruth, my grandmother.

Ruth was remarkable to me because she lived a life of privilege, yet always taught me to be kind to everyone, no matter their creed, color or social status. She loved to travel, wear her furs to the grocery store and had lovely jewelry that I still wear to this day.

On day 305 of Photo 365 I wish my grandma could have known me now, as an adult. But I’ll cherish her memory forever.

#CommuterProblems

In what is quickly becoming a week of posts about my commute, I decided to work past 6:00 pm today to see if traffic was lighter for my ride home. I found wide open highways. So on day 304 of Photo 365, I present the positive side to #CommuterProblems:

1. You get to listen to audiobooks and podcasts, something you never have time for in your busy life.
2. You can work out all of your day’s mental anxieties and frustrations on the way home, banging on the steering wheel if need be.
3. You can talk to yourself and people sitting in the car next to you will think you’re talking on the phone.
4. You can talk to Siri and work on developing a stronger human-computer bond.
5. You can get to know the cleaning staff at your office building who are startled to see you when they walk into your office, seeking out the trash can.
